The mecca for street photography would have to be New York and one that has been captured by countless photographers. Before my first trip to New York in 2008, I had recently purchased my first digital SLR, a Canon D40 with a 17-85mm zoom lens. I had been skeptical about the quality of digital images over analogue negative images. However the ability to record and delete as many images as I wished, gave me the freedom to shoot in a much more carefree manner.

What is Street Photography?

Street photography captures people and places within the public domain. More specifically it is defined as 'un-posed, un-staged photography which captures, explores or questions contemporary society and the relationships between individuals and their surroundings.'

Street photography shows a pure vision of something, like holding up a mirror to society. It often tends to be ironic and can be distanced from its subject matter, and often concentrates on a decisive or poignant moment. On the other hand, much street photography takes the opposite approach and provides a very literal and extremely personal rendering of the subject matter, giving the audience a more visceral experience of walks of life they might only be passingly familiar with.

Street photography can often cross over into other genres such as portraiture, photojournalism and urban landscape photography. It is perhaps better categorized as a way of working than simply a genre in itself. The general consensus, however, is that images should be spontaneous with minimal interaction between subject and photographer.
