Europe 1981

In 1981, I traveled through Europe and the Middle East for 11 months, commencing in Tel Aviv, Israel and ending in London, England. My camera was a Mamiya M645; a medium format SLR with an eye level viewfinder. My preferred black and white film was Ilford FP4 and HP5, 120 roll film. Upon my return to Australia, I processed the film in a darkroom I set up in the laundry of my home.

What is Street Photography?

Street photography captures people and places within the public domain. More specifically it is defined as 'un-posed, un-staged photography which captures, explores or questions contemporary society and the relationships between individuals and their surroundings.'

Street photography shows a pure vision of something, like holding up a mirror to society. It often tends to be ironic and can be distanced from its subject matter, and often concentrates on a decisive or poignant moment. On the other hand, much street photography takes the opposite approach and provides a very literal and extremely personal rendering of the subject matter, giving the audience a more visceral experience of walks of life they might only be passingly familiar with.

Street photography can often cross over into other genres such as portraiture, photojournalism and urban landscape photography. It is perhaps better categorized as a way of working than simply a genre in itself. The general consensus, however, is that images should be spontaneous with minimal interaction between subject and photographer.
